30 April 2025

Kim Browne

As I reflect on April’s whirlwind of long weekends and celebrations, freedom has been front of mind. South Africa recently celebrated Freedom Day, commemorating our country’s first democratic elections on the 27th of April 1994. This year, the bonus holiday on Monday meant I could enjoy an extra-long birthday weekend off — YAY!

Freedom, to me, is layered. It’s personal, professional and societal, each facet carrying its own meaning and responsibilities. As the CEO of Twisted Toast Digital, the freedom to run a business according to our vision is empowering. But with this freedom comes the weight of responsibility to our team, our clients and our broader community. Striking this balance is both a challenge and a privilege.

Having just celebrated Easter, a period symbolising renewal and hope, I find parallels between this season of contemplation and the continual quest for freedom in all areas of life. Easter offers us a moment of tranquility and introspection amidst a rapidly changing and often tumultuous world. It reminds us to pause, reflect and recalibrate our personal and collective compass.

Our world today faces a level of turmoil that can feel overwhelming. Geopolitical uncertainties, economic fluctuations and social upheavals challenge our perception of freedom and stability. Yet, within this context, our liberties become even more significant. True freedom means actively contributing to a more stable, fair and compassionate society.

This perspective deepens my appreciation for the collective effort that makes freedom possible. As we move beyond Workers’ Day, celebrated yesterday on the 1st of May, it becomes clear how deeply our freedoms are linked to the hard work and dedication of millions who strive daily for progress. Workers’ Day is a powerful reminder of the dignity of work and its role in securing and expanding our freedoms.

At Twisted Toast Digital, we are fortunate to have a team that embodies these values daily. Their dedication, creativity and collaboration form the foundation of our freedom to deliver unique and impactful solutions for our clients. As we return from these public holidays and celebrations, refreshed and energised from quality time spent with family and friends, the focus now shifts back to the rewarding work we do together.

On a personal note, celebrating my birthday amidst the extended Freedom Day weekend was an unexpected blessing. It provided a quiet moment to appreciate the privilege of choice and the support of those around me. Birthdays have a way of prompting reflection on the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. The freedom to dream, to choose our paths and to impact others positively. (I loved spending my free time with my family and fur-babies, Simba and Ozzy.)

The responsibility accompanying freedom is clear: It is about mindful decision-making, intentional actions and thoughtful engagement with the world around us. In business, this translates into ethical leadership, responsible practices and the courage to innovate meaningfully. Personally, it means authenticity, compassion and gratitude.

As we step forward into May, the mission remains to uphold and honour the delicate balance between freedom and responsibility. Together, we can navigate uncertainty with clarity, innovate through collaboration and build a future where freedom remains not just an ideal, but a lived reality.

Let’s all embrace our freedom with purpose.
